French Pronunciation Hacks - Part 1

Bonjour everyone!

If you’ve ever felt like French pronunciation is a beautiful mystery you just can’t quite crack… you’re not alone. The good news? You don’t need to master everything at once.

In this blog, there are three simple but powerful pronunciation hacks that will instantly make your French sound more natural.

  1. “Eu” Sounds Like “Uh”

One of the most common French sounds is “eu.”

Think of it like a soft “uh” - but with rounded lips (as if you’re about to whistle).

Try it with these words:

  • bleu

  • peu

  • deux

  • fleuve

  • monsieur

  • heure

Take your time. Round your lips slightly and keep the sound smooth and relaxed.

  1. “Eau” Sounds Like “Oh”

Good news: this one is easy!

Whenever you see “eau”, pronounce it like a clear “oh.”

For example:

  • eau

  • château

  • beau

Nice and simple, right? 😊

  1. “-tion” Sounds Like “-sion”

In French, the ending “-tion” is pronounced like “sion” (a soft “see-yon”).

Examples:

  • nation

  • natation

  • passion

  • organisation

  • collaboration

  • félicitation

  • vision

Notice how smooth and flowing it sounds - not sharp like in English.

Bonus Tip: “Ch” Sounds Like “Sh”

Here’s a classic beginner mistake:

pronouncing “ch” like the English “ch” in chocolate.

In French, “ch” almost always sounds like “sh.”

Examples:

  • chocolat

  • cher

  • chapeau

Soft and smooth - never “tch.”

Mastering pronunciation isn’t about being perfect - it’s about being consistent. Small adjustments make a huge difference over time.
