In today’s lesson, you’ll learn how to say the days of the week, name the months of the year, and ask & tell the time in French.
Les jours de la semaine – Days of the Week
In French, the week starts on Monday. Repeat after me:
Lundi – Monday
Mardi – Tuesday
Mercredi – Wednesday
Jeudi – Thursday
Vendredi – Friday
Samedi – Saturday
Dimanche – Sunday
To Note:
Use “le” before the day: le lundi, le mardi, etc.
Days are not capitalized in French.
Les mois de l’année – Months of the Year
Here are the 12 months to learn:
Janvier – January
Février – February
Mars – March
Avril – April
Mai – May
Juin – June
Juillet – July
Août – August
Septembre – September
Octobre – October
Novembre – November
Décembre – December
To Note:
Use the preposition “en” with months: en mars, en décembre, etc.
Months are not capitalized in French.
Example sentences:
Mon anniversaire est en juin.
Aujourd’hui, c’est le 1er mai.
Quelle heure est-il? – Asking and Telling Time
To ask the time, say:
Quelle heure est-il ? – What time is it?
Basic Time Structure:
Il est + [number] + heure(s)
Examples:
Il est une heure – 1 o’clock
Il est deux heures – 2 o’clock
Il est huit heures du matin – 8 a.m.
Il est neuf heures du soir – 9 p.m.
Adding Time Details:
et demie → Il est cinq heures et demie (5:30)
et quart → Il est sept heures et quart (7:15)
moins le quart → Il est huit heures moins le quart (7:45)
24-Hour Time in France:
14h00 = deux heures de l’après-midi
20h00 = huit heures du soir
